Left handed drawing can be tough for people who are dominant in their right hand. My daily challenge of drawing with my left hand provided some deep insights and opened up interesting questions.

As you know I started a left hand drawing challenge 5 days ago and I thought it would be appropriate to talk about my assessment as I did the drawings one after another. I deliberately chose subjects that would challenge me in straight lines, textures and shading and soon to move to color pencils.

Here is what I found:

  • I initially thought I would completely suck with my left hand but was pleasantly surprised with the results
  • I could tell my mind was trying to race ahead but my agility with my left hand was not at the level of what my mind wanted
  • I noticed a very odd thing – when I would tell myself on that day that I was going to do a good drawing with of course my right drawing hand, my mind kept glued to the fact that the drawing was going to be tough although I knew that this was not the case. I guess doctors or physicians have a name for this?
  • I could not tell at this stage whether I was improving because it still felt awkward and clumsy
  • I think the fact that I have trained my right arm with some drawing skills was paying off with my left hand
  • I can almost see and feel the types of clumsiness that newbies can face and hinder them from taking up drawing altogether

These findings beg some additional questions:

  • Would I be able to teach other would-be artists better now that I can feel the ‘clumsiness’ in drawing?
  • Could this exercise also help my right hand drawing abilities?
